Born in New York City, Monell fell in love with baseball at a young age, his father, Johnny Sr., played professionally for seventeen years. During his high school years at Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx, he stood out as a promising talent. Drafted three times, he finally signed a professional contract after being drafted in the 30th round by the San Francisco Giants in 2007, marking the start of his professional journey. This selection may have come late in the draft, but Monell's dedication and talent set him apart. He embraced the opportunity to prove himself every step of the way.


During his career, he developed into a strong defensive catcher and showcased a powerful left-handed swing. However, the path was not easy.
